Assessment
DIBELS
DIBELS assesses "the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through 6th grade. They are designed to be short (1 minute) fluency measure used to regularly monitor the development of early literacy and reading skills.
More information can be found on their website at DIBELS Assessment Information . DIBELS takes a total of 4-5 minutes with each student.
Lexia Rapid
This is our second year using this assessment for grades 3-5. It is called the Lexia Rapid. We are using this instead of the GRADE. The assessments give similar information, but the Lexia Rapid is given the computer and should only take a 45 minute period. The GRADE took at least 3 - 45 minute periods. Our hope is to lessen the amount of assessments for our students while still gathering data that helps us instruct each child best.
More information on Lexia Rapid can be found here: Lexia Rapid Assessment
Conferencing
We continue our data collection by reading with each student. We use the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Kit for grades K-2. This allows us to assess their reading level and find "just right" books for students in both small group and independent reading. Teachers in grades 3-5 confer with their students by listening to them read and discussing the books they have chosen. This helps teachers observe their reading behaviors and preferences.
Words Their Way
Students in grades 3-5 take a 10 minute spelling inventory to help teachers groups students for spelling and word study through the program Words Their Way. You can find more information in the article below.

RTI for reading began Tuesday October 9th for K-2 students and Monday October 15th for grades 3-5. These dates were chosen so that students can acclimate to their new classrooms and the team has time to assess each child. The RTI team includes classroom teachers, specialists, special educators and ELL teachers. Having all hands on deck allows us to make small groups so that we can really zero in on student needs. I
