First GradeIn first grade students are blossoming into readers who can use reading skills and strategies to tackle text successfully. Their knowledge of sound/symbol relationships solidifies and extends, which allows for more efficient decoding and spelling. These concepts are taught in the core curriculum during Wilson Fundations lessons and then reinforced and extended during small group reading time. Students also come to reading groups to work on a variety of reading strategies to strengthen comprehension and fluency that have been taught during reading lessons in class. Groups in first grade focus on the following:
- Phonological awareness
- Reading and spelling words with short vowels, blends, and digraphs; introduction to long vowel patterns
- Comprehension strategies
- Vocabulary
- Fluency
