Find books that students love. Listen to audio books and then have your children continue from where you started. Take book reviews from friends. Follow a beloved author. Don't be afraid of the graphic novel (make sure students know that in graphic novels pictures are just as important as words).
Don't worry about what anyone else is reading. Book choice is so important. Let them learn what they love and then squeak something in every 4th book that you want them to read. If your child wants to read a book above their level, read it to them or listen to the audio book. It's ok to listen to books above your level and practice skills with books on your level. Fostering a love for reading is the most important thing we can do for a child.
